What is Parent Coaching? Collaborative Partnership Video

Now you are going to see a video of a speech-language coaching session with a family over Zoom. This is the family’s second parent coaching session. The coach and parent are using the book, “An Early Start for Your Child with Autism, Using Everyday Activities to Help Kids Connect, Communicate, and Learn” written by Dr. Sally Rogers, Dr. Geraldine Dawson, and Dr. Laurie Vismara. This book is full of ideas and strategies to support young children having or showing early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In the video, you will hear the coach refer to the “refrigerator list” on page 90. The strategies on this list are about “increasing your child’s attention to you.” The coach and the parent have a discussion about the strategies on the list, if the parent has a good understanding of the strategies, and if the parent would like to continue working on this list, or move to another list in the book. This video shows the initial part of that discussion.

Notice how the coach comments and responds to what the parent has to say. Notice the collaborative partnership.
